Senate Ag Committee Chairman Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., and Ranking Member Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., have issued a joint statement concerning the announcement that China has set anti-dumping duties of from 50.3% to 105.4% on U.S. poultry imports.
"Part of the U.S. commitment to doubling our exports within five years has got to be a vigorous defense of our trading relationships and I urge the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to continue to work to resolve this issue," Lincoln said. "It is unfortunate that the poultry industry has become a political football because it is real jobs that get impacted."
Chambliss says he finds it questionable to claim the poultry industry is the recipient of subsidies, since government policy increases the price of one of their key inputs, feed grains. He says the Chinese are targeting this industry to express their frustration with other trade matters.
