Chambliss Wins Georgia Senate Runoff

Senate Ag Committee ranking member wins nearly 60% of the vote.

Published: Dec 3, 2008

Nearly a month after the election, the question of who will represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate has been answered. Incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss won the runoff that was mandated when he fell short of a majority in the general election with 49.8% of the vote. In the runoff Tuesday Chambliss had a sweeping victory over Democratic challenger Jim Martin, garnering 57% of the vote.

In addition to settling Georgia's Washington delegation, the vote also put to rest the notion of a Democratic supermajority in the Senate of 60 votes. The only way that could be reached was if Chambliss lost and Senator Norm Coleman, R-Minn., lost in the recount that continues in Minnesota.

Chambliss brought in several former GOP presidential candidates to campaign for him during the past month, capping the campaign off on Monday with Alaskan governor and GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

With the victory Chambliss retains his slot as the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He has served as the ranking member since 2004 and served two years prior to that as chairman.
