The Chicago Board of Trade broke its annual trading volume record for the fifth year in a row with 805,884,413 contracts traded in 2006, a 19.5% increase from 2005.

CBOT broke the 2005 record of 674,651,393 with time to spare, announcing the new record on Nov. 6.

Average daily volume was up 20% from 2005, reaching 3,210,695, and electronic trading increased 29% to 2,240,262 in 2006.

The fourth quarter and December saw volume increases as well, with 55,344,340 contracts traded in December - 33% higher than the previous December.

"The year 2006 was truly historic for the CBOT, as we improved access to the Exchange and launched several new and innovative products," says Bernard W. Dan, President and CEO of CBOT. "The extension of Agricultural futures to the CBOT electronic trading platform, side-by-side with open auction trading during daytime hours, combined with rising demand for Agricultural risk management tools, contributed to volume growth and expanded the Exchange's global reach."
