Enrollment of no-till and seeded grasslands into the NFU's Carbon Credit Program ended last month and according to the organization, acreage has more than doubled. Estimates show that around 2,400 producers in 26 states have enrolled more than 2.5 million acres in the program.

"Our nation's producers are feeding the world, fueling the future and, through this program, playing an active role in protecting our environment," NFU President Tom Buis says. "I'm pleased to see such wide-spread support across the countryside."

The Chicago Climate Exchange has approved the National Farmers Union to enroll producer's acreage into carbon credits to be traded like agricultural commodities on the CCX. These credits are sold to companies, municipalities and individuals to offset their carbon emissions and producers earn income. More than $2.3 million in partial payments were made earlier this year to participants in the program for 2005 and 2006.
