Industry sources say Canadian oats may be exported to non-traditional destinations, such as Australia and the European Union, after 2006-07 shortfalls in other countries.
Europe and Australia saw poor years for oats, potentially opening up markets for outside oats. Canada exported 1.877 million metric tons of oats in 2005-06, 98% of which went to the U.S. Less than 1% went to Europe, with Norway the leading destination.
"There is no doubt that the vast majority of Canada's oats will go to the U.S. during the new crop year," says Joe Wang, a coarse grains analyst with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
