Canada to Weigh in On COOL
Pork producers from Canada have comments on rules.
Compiled by staff
Published: Aug 27, 2008
As the U.S. Department of Agriculture receives comment on the proposed Country of Origin Labeling rules, our neighbors to the north would like to see some flexibility. The Executive Director of the Canadian Pork Council, Martin Rice, says the CPC will submit comment, calling for the broadest possible interpretation of processing.
Pork that goes into processing and food service or pork that is exported by the
United States
is not subject to COOL. Rice says we would be looking at maximizing opportunities to have the pork considered as processed. Rice suggests that could include pork that has been marinated or has otherwise been enhanced to make it more consumer user friendly.
Public comment is being accepted until
Sept. 30, 2008
. That is when the rules are schedule to go into effect. However, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer says his department plans to conduct education and outreach activities during the six months following the rule's effective date to help the industry comply with the law.
