Bush Ups Immigration Bill Support

A sweeping bipartisan immigration bill may yet come to a vote in the Senate.

Published: Jun 18, 2007

After the Bush Administration stepped up efforts to back a controversial, far-reaching bipartisan immigration bill, the Senate agreed to revive debate on the legislation later in the month.

President Bush has taken flack from many conservatives for supporting the bill, which only drew seven Republican supporters last week. But in an attempt to secure more Republican votes, Bush pledged $4.4 million last week to go towards enforcement for employment laws and border security.

Those funds would come from fines paid by illegal immigrants under the bill.

The immigration bill would crack down on employers hiring undocumented workers, tighten border security, and pave the way for 12 million illegal aliens to achieve status.
