Buis Steps Down as NFU President

He is leaving to take reins of Growth Energy.

Tom Buis, president of the National Farmers Union, will step down from that position on March 15 to become CEO of Growth Energy. Farmers Union delegates at the upcoming national convention March 8-10 in Washington, D.C. will choose a replacement.

"Representing America's family farmers, ranchers and rural citizens has been a privilege and an honor," Buis said. "I've had the opportunity to meet farmers from all corners of the country and am continually impressed with their optimism, hard work and dedication to feeding, and now fueling, our nation."

Concerning his new position, Buis says the production of renewable energy from our farms is the greatest economic opportunity for rural America he has seen in his lifetime.

"Home-grown renewable fuels create jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and protect our environment," Buis said. "I am looking forward to advancing this cause and addressing the myths and the facts when it comes to renewable fuels."

Buis, who was elected NFU president in 2006 and again in 2008, says leaving NFU was not an easy decision to make. He has been with the organization since 1998, serving as vice president of government relations before 2006.
