Members of President Obama's budget deficit commission say they defied expectations by winning over 11 of the 18 commission members who voted for the commission's final proposal. But in the end, that was not enough as 14 votes were necessary for the report to be forwarded to Congress. But the plan is expected to move forward because a majority of the committee embraced it.
The plan, titled "The Moment of Truth," called for cutting $4 trillion from the national debt before 2020 by placing a cap on discretionary spending.
The report includes wide-ranging suggestions for curtailing spending while raising revenues. The report raised concerns among conservatives because it proposes some tax increases. For the left, the measures proposed - including some key changes to Social Security and Medicare, came under fire.
As for ag spending, the commission didn't miss the industry suggesting a series of changes and cuts as well. However, the discussion spurred by the report could have implications in the future as the new Congress grapples with the deficit.
