The 2009 harvest lingers on, but producers are already sizing up their marketing alternatives for the crop that's in the bin. Kevin Dhuyvetter of Kansas State University developed a spread-sheet to break down the alternatives side by side, whether it involves futures, options or some combination of the two.
The spreadsheet compares potential returns of your alternatives against anticipated move-ment in the cash market to add common sense to your marketing decisions. It also creates a graphical representation of the comparison so that you can see how the alternatives change rela-tive to each other as the market moves one way or the other.
We’ve chosen the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 932-kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002 or Excel XP. Get to this month's spread-sheet by visting Option Strategies
