Brazil's Senate is set to vote on legislation that would legalize the production of GM crops in the country, with farmers allowed to use GM seeds for their October planting. The new law would end the current ban on research and planting of GM soybeans in a country that already is the second-largest producer of them.
Farmers planting transgenic beans are expected to increase productivity by 15% and reduce production costs by 30% because of a reduced need for herbicides.
