By Friday, Nov. 16 60% of Brazil's 2007-08 soybean crop was seeded, according to Celeres, an agribusiness consultancy. The group estimates that Brazilian soybean growers will be planting about 22 million hectares (about 48.4 million acres) of the crop this season. That's about an 8% increase over the previous-year crop.
The crop is off to a slower start with about 4% emerged compared to 13% by this time last year, Celeres says. The five-year average is 5% of plants emerging by this time.
Planting got off to a late start this year in Mato Grosso, the top producing states, as well as center-west states. In Mato-Grosso, 79% of the crop has been planted, compared to 83% last year and about 9% of that crop has emerged.
In Parana, 75% of the crop has been planted, which about matches the previous-year total, but just 4% of the crop has emerged. The No. 3 producing state - Rio Grande do Sul - has seeded 32% of its fields, compared to 47% last year. According to Celeres, none of the Rio Grande do Sul crop has yet to emerge.
