This week six biodiesel producers and marketers were certified as BQ-9000 compliant. BQ-9000 is a quality assurance program that looks at biodiesel standards as well as companies' storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution, and fuel management practices. Any biodiesel producer or marketer is eligible to become either a BQ-9000 Producer or BQ-9000 Marketer.

"BQ-9000 companies dominate the industry with 75% of biodiesel produced in the US, which is a huge achievement," said Leland Tong, Chairman of the National Biodiesel Accreditation Commission which is the governing body for the BQ-9000 program. "I think that demonstrates the market power of BQ-9000."

NBAC certified Downs Company of Corona, Calif. as a BQ-9000 marker. Piedmont Biofuels of Pittsboro, N.C.; Beacon Energy Corp. of Cleburne, Texas; Lake Erie Biofuels of Erie, Pa.; Paseo Cargill Energy of Kansas City, Mo.; and Ag Processing Inc. (AGP) of St. Joseph, Mo. were all certified as BQ-9000 producers.

Plants that were certified under BQ-9000 performed the best at meeting national fuel quality standards according to a study performed by the Renewable Energy Laboratory earlier this year.
