Both Chambers Addressing Energy

Bills will help biofuels, deal with soaring gasoline prices.

In the Senate, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Tim Johnson, D-S.D., have introduced legislation that would focus on developing and deploying domestically grown and produced energy. The Securing America's Future with Energy and Sustainable Technologies Act would establish renewable energy and energy-efficiency standards, incentives for developing biofuels and biofuel infrastructure, and targets for the availability of advanced vehicle technologies.

The legislation, first introduced by the two during the previous Congress, would establish new incentives for biofuels infrastructure and deployment; a more cost-effective extension of tax credits for ethanol and biodiesel that reward efficient producers; a renewable electricity standard of 25% renewable energy by 2025; an energy-efficiency resource standard of 1% per year; and targets for the availability of advanced vehicle technologies including hybrid, electric, and flex-fuel vehicles.

The Senate proposal coincided with the introduction by House Republicans of an "American Energy Initiative," a policy umbrella under which House leaders say a series of bills aimed at addressing soaring gasoline prices would be introduced. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, says rising gas prices are a major burden for American families and small businesses.
