Both Ames and Weybridge BSE Tests Reveal Negative Results

Artificial staining caused initial non-definitive result.

Cattle producers can breathe a sigh of relief as tests from both USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, and Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, England, have determined that the non-definitive test result reported on July 27 is negative for bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Chief Veterinary John Clifford says, "The initial non-definitive result was caused by artifactual (artificial or untrue) staining and, while this staining did not resemble BSE, we felt the prudent course was to conduct the additional tests."

Jim McAdams, National Cattlemen's Beef Association president, reminds producers that while this animal did not have BSE, the government indicates the enhanced surveillance program may identify additional cases.
