Biotech Beet Approval Overturned

Federal judge stops use of GMO sugar beets until further review is completed.

Published: Aug 16, 2010

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Jeffery White overturned government approval of genetically altered sugar beets until another review of how the crops affect other foods is complete.

More than one million acres of the modified seed has been planted over a 10-state region. Once this crop is harvested, sugar beet growers will not be allowed to plant the modified seed until an environmental impact statement is submitted by USDA, which can take two to three years.

White did deny the request for an injunction to permanently ban the genetically altered beets.
