Agricultural biotechnology acceptance continues to rise after a decade of commercial use, according to a report released by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications last week.
The report covers the global status of biotech crops in 2005, noting that four new countries — the Czech Republic, Portugal, France and Iran — and an additional 250,000 farmers planted biotech crops last year.
Global biotech crop area increased to 222 million acres, a gain of 11% from 2004. "Biotechnology has been embraced by 8.5 million farmers in 21 countries," says Gretchen Flanley, U.S. Grains Council's director of biotechnology programs. "The increasing acceptance of biotech will in turn help decrease trade barriers based on its use."
