A combination of biodiesel and generic heating oil will be available for home heating use this winter. The cleaner burning Bioheat fuel will be mostly available in New England the Mid-Atlantic states this year.
Distributors blend Bioheat fuel at between 2 and 20% biodiesel and 80 to 98% diesel. To make Bioheat home heating oil, fuel dealers blend biodiesel with ASTM D 396 heating oil. The National Biodiesel Board and National Oilheat Research Alliance will aim to include 5% biodiesel in oilheat.
"Bioheat fuel is the beginning of a new era for Oilheat," says Paul Nazzaro, NBB director of petroleum outreach. "It sets a major milestone in the heating oil industry to both advance cleaner burning biodiesel and to introduce a truly new and improved product. Fuel dealers system-wide will be proud to offer their existing and future customers this option."
Bioheat fuel can provide lower emissions and odor and clean out older heating oil systems over time, as well as helping U.S. economic development and energy security.
