Beef Demand High in Spite of Prices

Cattle prices and beef sales keep retail prices high.

Published: Oct 30, 2007

Consumers shouldn't expect a break on the price of beef anytime soon if cattle prices and beef sales are any indication. U.S. Department of Agriculture livestock analyst Shayle Shagam says even with rising prices beef continues to fly off the grocery shelf.

"Retail prices in September were quite strong," Shagam says. "We saw USDA's retail choice beef price was about $4.23 a pound, which was up about 8% from last year and above the August price."

But sales are not missing a beat. Shagam says beef cattle prices are expected to remain at current high levels at least into late spring, which would indicate continued high retail prices.
