Australia is raising its production forecast for 2010-2011 winter crops, which brings the estimate more in line with industry observers. However, those same observers are watching weather conditions and a possible spring locust outbreak - which would have the final say on yield.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics pushed up its wheat forecast to 22.1 million metric tons from its March estimate of 21.9 million tons. Barley production for this crop year slid, however, to 7.3 million tons from an estimate of 8 million tons in March.
While that wheat number is up, the total output for winter crops is sliding to 35.1 million tons, down from 35.24 million tons in the 2009-2010 crop year. Australia uses only about 7 million tons of its winter crops domestically with the rest available for export.
The country, coming out of severe drought in the past year and a half is seeing better rains in key production areas. However, a significant locust outbreak on early planted crops is a concern.
