ASA President Talks Farm Bill

Risk management tools will be an issue the group will fight for.

ASA President Alan Kemper told a home-town crowd of farm bureau members it's going to be hard to hold our own on this next farm bill. Kemper predicted maybe a 15% cut across direct payments if they can be saved. Kemper told the crowd in Lafayette, Ind., the American Soybean Association will do everything they can for risk management tools.

Kemper said the focus will be on putting more effort into trying to get the direct payments, but mainly risk management tools like improving crop insurance so the younger generation and others who are financially struggling can have a good safety net.

Kemper said that Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., Chairman of the Senate Ag Committee, told him that she wants to have hearings on Capitol Hill in June and July and come out to field hearings during the summertime, then go back in after the Labor Day recess and actually start writing, or marking up the Farm Bill.
