In the Argentine Agriculture Secretariats weekly crop report Monday, expectations for the 2007-2008 corn crop were for lower yields as a result of dry weather over much of Argentina's corn area. Moderate showers that fell Monday were not taken into account in the crop report that showed conditions through Jan. 24.
About 40% of Argentina's corn is grown in the province of Cordoba. Adverse weather caused many fields there to be replanted. Dry weather and a late frost is hurting corn that was planted in September and October. Conditions are mixed in Buenos Aires, but yields are expected to be lower in the provinces of Santa Fe and La Pampa.
According to the report, as of Jan. 24, 97% of corn had been planted, slightly behind last year. Soybean planting was 99% complete. Wheat harvest was finished last week, with a total production of 15.4 million metric tons.
