Argentina Wheat Still Starved for Rain

Wire reports note that light rains gave some benefit, but other crops still delayed.

The young wheat crop in Argentina got a moisture boost over the weekend, but there's not enough moisture yet to get the corn crop into the ground, according to wire service reports. Wheat conditions are generally good across Buenos Aires Province, while conditions remain poor in Cordoba and Santa Fe, due to drought, according to information from the country's Agriculture Secretariat.

Argentine farmers finished 2006-07 wheat planting, with a forecast of 5.3 million hectares, or about 11.5 million acres. That's up from about 11.1 million acres a year ago. USDA has forecast Argentina's wheat crop at 13.25 million tons.

Corn planting remains slow with farmers waiting for more moisture and better temperature conditions. The country will plant about 7.3 million acres of corn during the next crop cycle, up about 3% from year-ago levels. Farmers are well behind last year's pace for getting the corn crop in. USDA forecasts Argentina's corn production at 17.5 million tons.

Soybeans will start going in later this month.
