APHIS Asked to Remove Regulations for GMO Corn

USDA seeks public comments on petition to deregulate corn.
Compiled by staff
Published: Dec 3, 2008

Public comments are being sought by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on a petition to deregulate corn genetically engineered to produce a microbial enzyme that facilitates ethanol production.

Following the comment period, APHIS will make a determination of nonregulated status if it can conclude that the organism does not pose a plant pest risk. If granted, the product could then be freely moved and planted without the requirement of permits or other regulatory oversight by APHIS.

According to APHIS scientific evidence indicates that there are unlikely to be any environmental, human health or food safety concerns associated with the genetically engineered corn.

Consideration will be given to comments received on or before Jan. 20, 2009. To submit comments visit the Federal eRulemaking portal by clicking HERE.
