Another Drop in Expectations for Australian Wheat Crop

Heatwave in New South Wales take big cut out of crop.
Compiled by staff
Published: Oct 4, 2007

Ian Donges, chairman of the Australian Wheat Board's international unit, predicts an Australian wheat crop of between 12 and 14 million tons. New South Wales, which usually produces about a third of Australia's wheat, has been hit by a heatwave that Donges says will dramatically drop the wheat crop.

Just last week, Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran said the crop could end up the same size as last year, around 10 million tons. After an incredibly dry year with abnormally low rainfall, Australia's wheat crop is expected to be poor, but really it's anyone's guess as to how the wheat harvest will turn out.
