Another Big Hurricane is Headed for the U.S.

Several hurricanes have hit the U.S. already in a very active hurricane season.

So far the U.S. has had visits from Hurricane Fay and Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna. Now headed for the Florida coast is Hurricane Ike.

"It's a major hurricane, Category 3 currently; it has been as strong as Category 4 and it looks like it's going to be approaching or reaching Florida by the middle of the week," says USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. "That is a big concern if it stays a major hurricane, which at this time is expected."

The official National Hurricane Center forecast calls for Ike to hover over southern Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday, which Rippey says could spell trouble as Florida is very vulnerable to flooding with remnants of Fay still around.

"If Ike were to come in and slow down over Florida that could be a huge concern," Rippey says. "There could be some very significant flooding especially considering the fact that Fay dropped as much as one to two feet of rain across the Sunshine State."

Hanna has brought some rain to the already saturated area, which raises concerns should Ike bring torrential rainfalls.
