Ammonia Prices Break Sharply at the Gulf

Retailers continue to work off effects of inventory bought last fall.

Published: May 1, 2009

While the prices farmers pay for ammonia actually rose a little in the latest USDA survey, wholesale prices on international markets continue to plummet, as growers cut back on acreage around the world. However, some producers are finding supplies of DAP and urea available at prices close to what they should be paying.

Anhydrous prices at the Gulf dropped $46.25 this week to $242, with product out of the Black Sea also falling. According to Farm Futures pricing model, that translates into a farmgate price of $407 to $458 a ton. But USDA put the average price paid by farmers in Illinois at $660, in a range of $600 to $800, up almost $5, as retailers continue to work off the effects of inventory bought at higher levels last fall.
