Four measures designed to slow or stop the EPA when it comes to the regulation of greenhouse gases failed in the Senate on Wednesday. A measure sponsored by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., garnered just 50 votes when 60 were needed. The amendment to the small business bill would have prohibited the EPA Administrator from promulgating any regulation concerning, taking action relating to or taking into consideration the emission of a greenhouse gas to address climate change. A similar bill is expected to get the approval of the U.S. House this week. That vote was delayed until Thursday.
Efforts by Democrats to limit the EPA also fell short in the Senate on Wednesday. An amendment from Senator Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., which would have delayed the agency from regulating greenhouse gases for two years, got just 12 favorable votes. Amendments from Senate Ag Chair Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Finance Chair Max Baucus, D-Mont., each received seven yes votes. Among other things, Stabenow was looking to exempt American agriculture from greenhouse gas regulations. Baucus was also looking to prohibit the regulation of greenhouse gases from certain sources.
