An amendment that would have provided $3.4 billion in disaster assistance for the 2005 crop year failed by a vote of 34 to 27 last week. The amendment was offered during a House Appropriations Committee mark-up
The amendment was offered by Rep. Marion Berry, D-Ark., as an add-on to a $92.2 billion supplemental for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and hurricane relief for the Gulf coast.
The measure would have provided an additional 50% of a direct payment or a payment based on yield loss.
Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., was the only Republican on the Committee to vote for the amendment.
