President Obama's commitment to Mexican President Calderon to resolve the long-standing dispute over access by trucks from Mexico to U.S. highways has brought to the surface long-standing support for resolution of the issue. Steve Mulder, spokesman for The Alliance to Keep U.S. Jobs, cautioned that similar commitments have been made in the past. Mulder says that now it is time for the Obama Administration to put action behind their words.
The tariffs were imposed in March following the U.S. Congress' termination of a U.S. pilot cross-border trucking program, an act that put the United States in violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. In a statement, Mulder said, "Every day this issue goes unresolved American jobs are put in jeopardy. Urgent action in the form of a plan that meets our nation's obligations is needed. Any further delays risk additional US investments and jobs."
The Alliance to Keep US Jobs is a coalition of 150 U.S. companies and associations that are concerned about the adverse impact to the U.S. economy stemming from a failure to resolve the longstanding trucking dispute. Members of the Alliance represent many thousands of U.S. workers that are employed by companies and industries that are subject to tariffs on their products shipped to Mexico.
