Agri-Industry Council Holds First Meeting

The group will discuss key areas concerning the corn industry.

Two dozen of agriculture's most influential leaders met last week to discuss key areas that affect the corn industry: food and fuel, trade and improving the nation's infrastructure.

The National Corn Growers Association held the first meeting of its newly established Agri-Industry Council last week. Much of the first meeting was organizational, as council members examined issues, elected officers and reviewed operating guidelines.

Historic Williamsburg, Va. was the setting for the conference. The tone for discussions was set by featured speakers Rik Kirkland of Fortune magazine and William Kristol of the Weekly Standard and Fox News. The two discussed issues ranging from the global economy to Washington politics. Other highlights included a wide ranging discussion of issues, challenges and opportunities that will benefit corn growers and industry, moderated by Lynn Henderson, publisher of AgriMarketing magazine.

At the end of the three-day conference, Council members elected an executive committee with co-chairmen NCGA President Ken McCauley and Syngenta America, Inc.'s Neil Strong. The executive committee will help coordinate other permanent committees and issues task forces prior to the council's next meeting in early 2008.
