AGI and Payment Limit Reform Implementation Requested

Extension of comment period concerns Congress.

Published: Feb 10, 2009

Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the ranking member of theSenate Agriculture Committee, Senator Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Subcommittee on Production, Income Protection and Price Support, and 16 other farm state senators on Monday sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack requesting USDA implement the rules and regulations pertaining to new Adjusted Gross Income and payment limit reforms to accurately reflect Congressional intent.

The Senators said in the letter that the interim rule, as published on Dec. 29, 2008, strays from congressional intent and could adversely affect American producers and farm operations throughout the country.

The USDA extended the comment period for this interim rule for 60 days, which was originally set to end on Jan. 28, 2009.  However during his first press conference with the media, Vilsack said the extended comment period was to hear from more producers and gather more information, but that changes to the rule for 2009 were very unlikely.
