Title X of the 2008 Farm Bill was the focus of a House Ag Subcommittee hearing Wednesday. The Subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture took a look at the implementation of provisions regarding specialty crops, organic agriculture and plant pest and disease management. Chairman Dennis Cordoza, D-Calif., says it is clear USDA has more work to do to fully implement Congress's direction in the Farm Bill.
According to Subcommittee Ranking Member Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, specialty crop and organic producers have the opportunity to benefit from the Farm Bill, but only if the integrity of the programs is protected. She says it's important to ensure the programs are implemented in a timely and appropriate manner.
The 2008 Farm Bill was the first to contain a separate title for issues related to specialty crops and organic agriculture. Cordoza says he intends to hold additional hearings on these issues.
