Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack outlined a plan Monday showing the government is engaged in a new strategy to improve global food security that goes beyond food aid. He outlined the program, which is a cooperative effort between USDA and the U.S. State Department, includes a three-pronged approach: Improving agriculture production around the world; providing better access; and ensuring the food is used properly.
Speaking at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Vilsack talked about the food security issue. However, he didn't put a price on the program. Wire services report that one spokesperson for the Obama administration notes that work would aim to double U.S. support for agricultural development to $1 billion in 2010.
The program will include teaching others about production practices around the world and improving the infrastructure to make the food more accessible.
