On Thursday, the Chicago Board of Trade agricultural complex traded 929,546 contracts. The figure broke the complex's previous all-time daily volume record of 869,005, set on Feb. 22, 2005.
The record reflects an increased demand in the agricultural sector, CBOT President and Chief Executive Bernard W. Dan said in a Friday press release. Dan also attributed the record trading to greater market access due to the addition of side-by-side trade.
In the third quarter this year, CBOT introduced daytime electronic trading of Agricultural futures side-by-side with its open auction environment. After the Aug. 1 launch of side-by-side trading, the agricultural average daily volume increased 40% compared to the third quarter of 2005, and 77% in September compared to the previous September.
