Last Friday, nine state governors asked Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to release $50 million to buy more pork as a way to boost the sagging pork industry. The Secretary replied Wednesday, saying his agency doesn't have that kind of money to spend on pork products.
"We are down to our last $7-8 million because there's been such a demand for so many kinds of commodities, including pork," Vilsack says. "We are trying to meet the demands of everyone."
Still, Vilsack says there may be more money in the pipeline this fall when the new fiscal year starts. Vilsack says there will be a little greater flexibility and at that time they will take a look at all these requests, and make determinations at that point in time in terms of what is being requested and what makes sense.
