Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer announced Thursday that Joe Glauber has been selected as the new Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He had been acting Chief Economist since Jan. 3, 2008 when former Chief Economist Keith Collins retired.

"I am pleased that Joe Glauber's thoughtful contributions will continue to guide USDA's informed decision-making for the continued betterment of American agriculture," said Schafer. "Joe is highly-regarded for his thorough analysis and insight and well-prepared for the demands of this post through 15 years of demonstrated strength in agricultural economics as USDA Deputy Chief Economist."

Glauber had served as Collin's Deputy since 1992 and returned to USDA last December from special assignment to the U.S. Trade Representatives Office as an agricultural ambassador to the Doha Round of World Trade Organization global trade talks.

In his new role, Glauber will be responsible not only the Office of the Chief Economist but also the World Agricultural Outlook Board, Risk Assessment and Cost Analysis and the Office of Energy Policy and New Uses. He will advise the ag secretary on the economic impact of programs, regulations and legislation and is also responsible for USDA projections and forecasts.
