25x'25 Wants Improvements for Agriculture in Clean Air Legislation

Alliance says more can be done.
Compiled by staff
Published: Nov 9, 2009

Legislation unveiled last week by six U.S. Senators seeks to clarify the opportunities for agriculture and forestry sectors in a climate change regulatory system. But, the 25X'25 alliance sees room for improvement. Among those improvements, the alliance would like to see the indirect land use change penalty on agriculture and forestry based biofuels be dealt with differently. The alliance wants to include more extensive and defensible research of the complex issue.

Also, 25X'25 says the final climate change legislation must align and broaden the definition of eligible renewable biomass that currently vary across different federal programs and arbitrarily exclude important and much needed biomass resources. And the measure must grandfather existing soy biodiesel producers under the greenhouse gas reduction requirements of the EISA RFS.

On the other side of the coin, the 25X'25 Alliance says the steps taken to ensure that the contributions and interests of farmers, ranchers and forestland owners are properly addressed are critically important and very much appreciated.
