11th Annual Heart of America Grazing Conference Begins Jan. 25
Livestock producers from across the Midwest will gather in southern Illinois later this month.

The 11th Annual Heart of America Grazing Conference is set for Jan. 25-26 in Mount Vernon, Ill. Dr. Teresa Steckler, an Extension Specialist with the University of Illinois, notes the two day event will feature a wealth of information for all types of livestock producers.
"We have a broad program for people that graze their animals whether it be cattlemen, dairy or beef, small ruminant production, sheep and goat production as well as those who graze horses," Steckler said. "Major topics that will be covered in this program are the benefits of grazing and adding clover to pastures, mob grazing, the role of novel fescues, parasite prevention, and use of co-products in grazing programs, dairy grazing, pasture management and cover crops."
Steckler notes those in attendance will hear from some of the foremost experts in animal grazing.
"We run the gamut, We have Dr. Lacefield from University of Kentucky that is very well respected in soil science and plant science; Dr. Mark Russell out of Purdue is going to talk about equine management; we have several from the federal government as well as educators from the state of Illinois," Steckler said. "We have Dan Shyck, a professor in beef nutrition at the U of I; Dr. Paul Walker who is going to give an interesting on the changing demographics of Illinois agriculture; as well as Ed Ballard, he's a retired educator, who's going to talk about the grazing spiral and what is the next step. Dr. Beth Walker, from Missouri State is going to talk about grazing for parasite prevention, so I think we have many people that they recognize."
In addition to the full agenda of discussions the event also features an extensive exhibit lineup. The goal of the conference is to give livestock producers some of the latest information about grazing practices.
