TPP Snag, South African Ag Photo Gallery and Christmas Lights

7 things you might have missed this week

Published on: Dec 20, 2013

Need to catch up? Here are some stories you might have missed this week.

1. FDA to delay food safety rules. Rules governing produce safety and handling on the farm level will be revised and delayed until early next summer, a Food and Drug Administration official said Thursday. Some farm groups were concerned that the rules would negatively impact small farms and conservation efforts.

2. Farm bill deal close? A new farm bill deal is close, says Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss, ranking member of the Senate Ag Committee. Delta Farm Press' David Bennett explains that funding of nutrition title programs has been a key hang up for a new farm bill. More from Jacqui Fatka: No Farm Bill Christmas Present.

3. BPI gets its day in court. A South Dakota judge Tuesday heard arguments in a case of defamation brought against ABC News by lean finely textured beef maker Beef Products, Inc. BPI alleged last year that ABC News reported false statements regarding the company's LFTB, calling the product "pink slime."

4. Four beds, three baths and a backyard farm. It's a growing trend – subdivisions complete with their own community-supported working farms. NPR's Luke Runyon says neighborhoods like these are drawing families in droves with the promise of farmers markets and canning classes.

5. TPP hits snag. Nearly 20 food and farm groups this week said if Japan does not agree to comprehensive trade liberalization in a Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, including elimination of tariffs on virtually all U.S. agricultural products, they are likely to oppose the entire deal.

6. South African recap. We told you last week of Farm Futures editor Mike Wilson's trip to South Africa. Now, here's a full recap, complete with photo gallery.

7. Commodity markets expected to stabilize. In its annual agricultural commodities outlook report, Rabobank on Tuesday indicated that commodity markets are expected to be stable into 2014, a change of pace from the past decade.
