Top Corn Yielders Can Show Off Their Talents

As planters roll, early by the way, across the Corn Belt, top-yielding producers may be thinking about competing in the National Corn Yield Contest. This week the National Corn Growers Association invites farmers to register since early registration is open allowing you to sign up for a reduced fee of $80 until June 15.

Dean Taylor, production and stewardship action team chair notes that while it may seem like the contest is a ways off "I have heard many growers speaking optimistically so far this year. In light of the favorable early planting conditions, I urge those who haven't entered before to become NCGA members and try their hand at high-yield techniques as contest entrants in 2012."

For nearly a half century, NCGA's National Corn Yield Contest has provided corn growers the opportunity to compete with their colleagues to grow the most corn per acre, helping feed and fuel the world. This has given participants not only the recognition they deserved, but the opportunity to learn from their peers.

The contest, which offers a wide range of state, regional and national award recognition, as well as a number of classes from irrigated to no-till (and many combinations in between) is designed to allow a wide range of operations to compete.

Given the effort to boost corn yields across the country, the techniques many past participants have learned have helped them to improve their overall farm's production.

Winners receive national recognition in publications such as the NCYC Corn Yield Guide, as well as cash trips or other awards from participating sponsoring seed, chemical and crop protection companies. In Kissimmee, Fla., during the 2013 Commodity Classic, state winners will be presented awards at the NCYC Breakfast and national winners will receive awards at the NCGA Awards Banquet.
