Secretary of Agriculture Travels to Farm Progress Show Next Week
Farmers will get two chances to sit in on public sessions as Ag Secretary Mike Johanns talks about the 2007 Farm Bill, and free trade agreements.

The Farm Progress Show, which opens its gates next Tuesday, Aug. 28, has become the centerpiece of information, technology and even policy information for farmers looking to keep up in a rapidly changing agricultural market. An important part of that in the past three years are the annual visits from Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns.
Johanns made the Farm Progress Show a stop on his farm bill listening tour in 2005, which also included his tour of the show and visits with farmers. He attended in Amana, Iowa in 2006. In fact, Johanns has probably spent more time in public talking to farmers than any ag secretary in the recent past.
He keeps up that record for 2007 with a visit Wednesday, Aug. 29, to the show. Johanns will visit the show for the day and will be available to talk with farmers twice during the event.
First up will be a visit from 12:30 to 1:30 in a one-hour discussion about the farm bill with Orion Samuelson at the ADM Tent, which is just east of the Main Entrance. This public event will give visitors a chance to hear about progress on the 2007 bill, and get the Secretary's impression of the bill's progress. It has passed in the House, and awaits attention from the Senate.
Second, Johanns will be part of a panel discussion about pending free trade agreements from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Monsanto Tent, which is at the South East Corner of the Show.
