New Video Asks, Answers Tough Question

Smithfield Foods has launched a new Web video that attempts to answer the question - can we feed 9 billion people by 2050 and do it responsibly? Dennis Treacy, executive vice president and chief sustainability officer, notes that company is excited to release the video that ponders that very question.

"Everyone involved in agriculture is well aware that we are facing perhaps the greatest challenge of our time - feeding a rapidly expanding, and ever hungry, global population," he says, in an email statement. "To do so we need to more than double our production of food, but not increase the land or other resources we are using in the process, a daunting task."

But, Treacy says, Smithfield believes the future is bright, and "we fully understand that we have a responsibility to meet this challenge and feed the world in a sustainable way."
