JCB Tunes Ecomax For Tier 4a Without After Treatment Emission Systems

Ecomax is the product of 110,000 hours of testing in 70 different machines.

JCB says its engineers have avoided after-treatment systems like diesel particulate filters and urea injection on the company's Ecomax engine -- powering equipment from 74 horsepower to 174 hp.

The Ecomax, built by JCB itself, is the result of more than $125 million in development and 110,000 hours of testing in 70 different machines. It meets Tier 4a emission standards through "in-cylinder" technologies alone.

Key features of the engine include a variable geometry turbocharger, a common-rail fuel injection system that runs at 29,000 psi, the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation and LiveLink connectivity (computer controls) for engine operation and data analysis. The Ecomax is capable of running on poorer quality fuels and on standard engine oils -- which mean it can be used in areas with less stringent emission standards and can remain economically feasible for a longer period around the world.

JCBs Ecomax engine has just been cleared for Tier 4a emission standards with no after treatment systems. The power plant is slated for use in equipment ranging from 74 horsepower to 174 hp.

JCB will use the engine in backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, wheeled loading shovels, JS excavators, rough terrain forklifts, skid steer loaders and compact track loaders.
