House Farm Bill Takes Another Step?

In a statement Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio , said the house would address a livestock disaster bill before the August recess.

The statement comes as a relief for many as a deepening drought continues to wreck a majority of the country, ruining crops and putting extreme pressure on livestock producers.

Now, talk of a one year extension of the current Farm Bill has been thrown around as well, but no reports have confirmed such a move.

Though not a full Farm Bill, the consideration of a disaster program could be a glimmer of hope for ag groups and politicians, and may cut a path for a vote on the entire bill.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack  and Senate Ag Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow have both asked repeatedly for the House to bring the Farm Bill to vote. Vilsack said in a press conference last week that focus should be on "providing direction" for Congress to develop new disaster assistance programs.

“This drought and the uncertainty it is causing farmers and ranchers and other segments of our industry underscores the importance of completing action on the 2012 farm bill," he said.

The House Farm Bill, which was approved by the House Agriculture Committee earlier this month, has been waiting in the wings to hit the House floor for a full vote, but Speaker Boehner has previously voiced concern over the bill.
