HSUS announced today a move to gestation-crate free pork supplies for Heinz food company. The company produces sauces and frozen meals using pork, including its Weight Watchers and TGI Friday's branded products.
On his blog, HSUS Chief Executive Officer Wayne Pacelle shared a statement from Heinz: "[Heinz] is currently working with its pork suppliers to understand and document their plans to reduce or end the use of crates. This information will be used to inform the company's choice of suppliers now and in the future, in an effort to increase the company's use of pork from crate-free sources and, over time, eliminate gestation crates from our supply chain."

Heinz becomes the latest to transition its pork supply. Pacelle said HSUS efforts are working to "bridge the gap between how farm animals are treated and how these animals should be treated."
Heinz joins McDonald's, Cracker Barrel, Kroger and many others to transition to a crate-free pork supply chain.

Peanut butter has protein and tastes better than meat. What is relevant about Pacelle's religion and political affiliation? As for "morals when it comes to humans"; What about all these factory farms producing food full
of antibiotics, E-coli and other waste such as pink slime. Substantiate. And what about the smell of these factory farms and their contamination of the environment? AND shouldn't there be "moral" when it comes to animals?

,I have lived on a farm all my life and with ample room and nutrional food, few, if any healthy baby pigs will be laid on. Anyway, we did not have the problem of pigs laying on their babies. Animals are not altogether stupid. Factory farms need to be a thing of the past crates on 7/17/2012 2:57:00 PM

Does the Hienz company name also carry with it the baggage of Al Gore, by marriage? HMMM Anonymous on 7/17/2012 3:52:00 PM

They don't know anything about HSUS except it's power and political influence. Time to start boycotting these businesses. I don't own a pig, but 4 generations of farmers (probably more) come before me in my direct ancestry. Farmer's don't need to learn anything about taking care of their livestock. Farmers care more about their livestock than HSUS or any government--these animals are their means of support and livelihood. Why wouldn't they ensure that these animals are protected and cared for properly. Anonymous on 7/17/2012 3:03:00 PM

The general public doesnt understand why gestational crates for pork is necessary. Sows laying on their young and kiling them etc, pigs are not people, they dont understand, stay off of baby. Soon pork will be in such high demand you will not be able to afford if this keeps up. Heinz, mc donalds , cracker barrel, kroger, wake up before its too late. Farms will be a thing of the past if left up to HSUS. All animals for be extinct, no more to serve our needs, can you say (vegetarian) Anonymous on 7/17/2012 2:14:00 PM

Does anyone remember farrowing without gestation crates? 20-40% of baby pigs could be crushed by the sow oand many were attacked by other sows protecting their own piglets and killed or seriously hurt.
I'm not understanding what HSUS is trying to gain by this. Anonymous on 7/17/2012 12:17:00 PM

This only means that HSUS has purchased enough stock in Heinz to suggest this and probably under a threat of a campaign against them as he did with McDonald's etc. Like holding a gun to the head of Heinz. The best thing that the government can do is ignore the vegan animal rights movement unless they want to see the USA loose more jobs and suffer more economic damage from these like groups who believe that taking in protein "ought" to be made illegal. No different than Negoation is Over or ALF, just works a tiny bit inside the law. There was a time that Pacelle worked outside the law as a hunt saboteur back and right after his college days. Someone needs to ask him what religion he is and with what political party he is affiliated. It is plain that Pacelle has no morals when it comes to humans and he has stated he has "no particular fondness for animals", so what really is the purpose of HSUS and like- groups?
