Drought Persists in California, Texas Panhandle

Another round of winter storms relieves dryness in Midwest, eastern and western Texas

Published on: Dec 12, 2013

Drought persists on the East Coast this week, even as another round of winter storms brought widespread precipitation across the Midwest and into the Northeast, the U.S. Drought Monitor says.

The winter storm brough snow to the Mid-Atlantic and into New York where Central Park received a trace. Originating in the upper Midwest, Duluth, Minn., gained over 10 inches from the storm. There, lingering drought impacts have been changed to a long-term impact designation, the Drought Monitor reported.

In parts of Nebraska, snow alleviated some severe drought, while in nearby South Dakota, abnormally dryness eased. Midwestern snowfall led to removal of moderate drought in Minnesota and improvements in abnormal dryness carried across into the Dakotas.

Into the Southern Plains, abnormal dryness has expanded in southeast Kansas. Moderate drought and abnormal dryness also expanded in northwest Oklahoma.

In Texas, precipitation has improved drought conditions in much of the state, though the Central region is still experiencing continued drought. Lake Brownwood in central Texas is below 58% full and has instituted stage 2 drought restrictions, the Drought Monitor reports.

Abnormal dryness expanded again this week in the northern Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington as well as on the Oregon Coast. These areas continue to miss most of the recent precipitation that has fallen around the Northwest and have significant deficits for the year.

Beneficial precipitation, however, has continued to accumulate in Utah. Severe and moderate drought improved in the central, southern, and eastern part of the state. Further improvements may be necessary in coming weeks through this area and in northern Arizona should precipitation continue.

Southeast Montana also saw a decrease in severe drought resulting from the recent precipitation events.

The West, including a large section of drought in California, remains unchanged.
