Louisville, Ky., Mayor Greg Fischer and Wichita, Kan., Mayor Carl Brewer have agreed upon a friendly wager to celebrate the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Final Four berth of their respective teams – each offering a basket of regional fare for the winner.
The two teams – the Louisville Cardinals and the Wichita State Shockers – will play Friday night in Atlanta, Ga., for a chance to advance to the NCAA men's championship game. The mayors placed their bets via phone call Thursday, Brewer's office says.
If the Cardinals advance, Fischer will receive a basket of goodies that includes a selection of Cargill Meat Solutions' Sterling Silver premium filet mignon, New York Strip and boneless ribeye steaks. A case of Brewer's best Bar-b-que Sauces (mild, hot and sweet) is also included, Brewer's office reports.
Louisville, Wichita mayors offer regional treats in basketball bet; Berkeley's mayor offers California wine for women's matchup
Brewer said the barbeque sauce was included to ensure Mayor Fischer wasn't "disappointed and empty handed" after a loss to Wichita.
Fischer countered with a fully-stocked bourbon bar including Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Four Roses, Evan Williams and Town Branch. All are members of the Kentucky Distillers Association, and are stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a tour of the state's seven signature distilleries.
The basket also includes T-shirts, hats, bourbon candles and glasses and a silver flask.
Berkeley's mayor in for women's tournament
Fischer has also extended the bet to the mayor of Berkeley, Calif., in honor of the Louisville women's basketball team's final four appearance vs. UC-Berkeley.
Berkeley's mayor Tom Bates is offering a dozen bottles of local California wine in response.
"I'm so confident of a Cardinal victory with both teams that I'm willing to bet fully-stocked bourbon bars on these critical games," Fischer said. "And I can't wait to eat that good steak from Kansas, along with some fine wine from California."
The UC Berkeley's women's team will take on Louisville Sunday in New Orleans, La.
