Bayer CropScience LP and DuPont Crop Protection have entered into an agreement through which Bayer CropScience will supply tebuconazole fungicide to DuPont for use in the United States to control Asian soybean rust in soybeans.

Pending regulatory approvals, DuPont Crop Protection will initially offer tebuconazole under a Section 18 Quarantine Exemption label to growers as DuPont Uppercut. "With the addition of tebuconazole for controlling rust, growers now have a range of DuPont products to help them manage their production needs, including Asana XL for soybean aphids, Canopy, Classic and Synchrony herbicides and Pioneer brand products," says Mark Wolters, U.S. marketing manager.

"This agreement between two of the major companies involved in combating Asian soybean rust is another important step forward in providing additional crop protection solutions to the American soybean grower to prepare for the potential threat of this devastating disease in the United States," says Bill Buckner, head of U.S. Business Operations for Bayer CropScience.

"Bayer CropScience has gained a great deal of experience and expertise in managing this disease in South America, where Asian soybean rust has been prevalent," Buckner adds.

In the United States, Bayer CropScience has two fungicides available to fight the disease: FOLICUR Fungicide, which offers both preventive and post-infection activity, and STRATEGO Fungicide, which offers only preventive activity. FOLICUR and STRATEGO have been granted a Section 18 Quarantine Exemption by EPA in various states for use on soybeans to control Asian soybean rust.
