The Aug. 14 deadline to sign up for the new Average Crop Revenue Election, or ACRE, program is only days away. Farm Futures research indicates only 15% of farmers will sign-up for the program this year citing complexity of the program as well as the risk of remaining in the program once signed up for the remainder of the farm bill.
Today's supply and demand report is another tool to use in the final days of sign up. Growers also can visit the National Corn Growers Associations's ACRE Resource Center to view presentations and payment analysis and download the updated ACRE Calculator. NCGA advises against waiting until Aug. 14 to visit your local FSA office.
Some resources for producers still struggling to make their decisions include:
USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) offers extensive information about the program, including a calculator, at www.fsa.usda.gov/dcp
A rebroadcast the K-State ACRE Webinar held Aug. 4 is at commerce.cashnet.com/KSUAGECON The University of Illinois has a free ACRE calculator located at www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu/fasttools/index.asp Texas A&M has developed a calculator and other ACRE resources available at www.afpc.tamu.edu/models/acre/index.php The Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute's calculator is at www.fapri.missouri.edu/farmers_corner/tools/ACRE.asp
Policy is one of the most important issues facing farmers today, but often the most difficult to digest. Jacqui Fatka has a passion to decode the often difficult world of agricultural policy into terms understandable for today's ag players.
Fatka joined the Farm Progress team as E-Content Editor in August 2003 after graduating from Iowa State University. Prior to full-time employment with Farm Progress, she interned at Wallaces Farmer magazine, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley's press office and the Iowa Pork Producers Association and freelanced for National Hog Farmer. She also worked as a public relations consultant with Iowa Industries for the Future, an effort to bring together major players in the biorenewables industry.
Currently Fatka is a staff editor at a sister publication, Feedstuffs. For Farm Futures she regularly tells the story of ongoing agricultural policy changes. Her byline can also be found on management profiles.
Fatka grew up on a grain and livestock farm near Atlantic, Iowa. She currently lives in central Ohio with her husband Eric.
